MOSAİCS
The church was decorated with mosaics. The original sixth-century mosaics have gometrical
and floral motifs. The figurative mosaics are made of ;gold,silver,glass,baked clay and
coloured Stones. Mosaic’s age are very old (730-842 ).
Some of the mosaics are;
Mosaic of the South Vestibule.2 th half of the 10 th century ,
Virgin Mary and Christ child 9 th century ,
Mosaic of the Emperor Alexandros 10th century ,
Mosaic of the Archangel Gabriel 2th half of the 9th century ,
Mosaic of the Deisis ,12th century ,
Mosaic of the Imperial family 9th century(Emporer Constantine IX, empress Zoe) ,
Mosaic of the Imperial family 12 th century.(Emporer loannes II Comnenus and empress
Eirene and prince Aleksios
THE SCHOOL (1740)
Placed in the South of the courtyard, the school for children was built by the Sultan Mahmud
I. It is a double floored building covered with a dome.
MUVAKKITHANE
This structure was built to regulate prayer-times. It was built by Sultan Abdülmecid in 1853 .
ıt is in the south corner of the courtyard. It is a square-paln building covered with a small
dome.
THE LIBRARY OF SULTAN MAHMUD I (1739)
Placed at the south.the library consists of two rooms for reading and preservation and a
connecting a corridor. The reading room and the corridor are decorated with panels of tiles
from İznik ,Kütahya and Tekfur workshops. They are dated to between the sixteenth and
eighteenth centuries. Tile’s motifs are designed flowers and cypress . the 5123 books and
manuscripts were moved to the Library of Süleymaniye in 1968.
THE FOUNTAİN (1740)
The fountain was placed in the south side of the courtyard . It was built by Sultan Mahmud
in 1740. A dome supported by eight marble columns covers it. On top of the columns are
decorated with bronz screen.
SULTAN’S TOMBS
During the otoman period , Tombs of the Sultans were built in the courtyard of Hagia Sofia.
In these tombs ,Otoman rulers were buried together with their wifes and daughters.(Selim
II,Murat III,Mehmed III,Mustafa I and Ibrahim)
WISH COLUMN
People put their thumb finger into the hole and turn their hand circular and make a wish which
they think will come true if their finger comes out wet. Some believe that the moisture heals
eye diseases. In reality, the column is of the type of stone whi
